Teacher Professional Development
BioBridge is a UCSD program supported by several national grants
which offers exciting professional development opportunities for all
biology teachers. The program got its start in the 2006-07 school year
in the Sweetwater Union High School District and is now in the Grossmont
Union High School District, Poway Unified School District, and San Diego
City Schools. District support includes providing substitutes and extra
duty pay for attending Saturday and after school sessions.
For the initial two labs, the Tsien lab (world leaders in small molecule
indicators) developed standards based high
school biology laboratories in Bacterial Transformation and Protein
Purification of fluorescent proteins. This year, three more standards
based labs will be refined for implementation in the 2008-09 school
year: 1) Enzyme-substrate reactions using a colorimetric analysis, 2)
Plant Genetics using microscopic analysis of corn cell wall, and 3)
Respiration using Vernier Probes. These labs are designed--and
being designed--to bring your students into the 21st century of science.
The four phase training offers teacher professional development, student
leader training, lab materials, as well as staff and mentor support
during classroom implementation.
Phase I - UCSD - (Full Day)
UCSD and district personnel lead you through the lab activity at UCSD.
The morning sessions include background talks, lab techniques, and the
opportunity to go through the lab hands-on. During lunch, you will
explore pedagogical methods to implement the lab successfully or listen
to UCSD researchers give talks. After lunch, you have the opportunity to
visit UCSD research labs such as the Protein Data Bank’s visualization
center where you can immerse yourself in 3-dimensional proteins!
Phase II - At a High School - (1/2 Day)
You select three or four of your own students to train as lab
mentors/leaders in your school. During this time you have the
opportunity to set up the entire lab and train your students in the
techniques. In addition, your students attend leadership sessions to
learn how to become effective mentors/leaders when they return to assist
you with the lab. The mentor/leaders also become part of the BioBridge
Society for Science Student Leaders which gives them more exciting
opportunities to participate in science leadership.
Phase III - Consultation at Your Site (2 hours)
A UCSD or District BioBridge representative will meet with you to bring
supplies, answer any questions, and go through lab protocols again
immediately before implementation.
Phase IV - Classroom - FREE Laboratory Supplies/ Classroom
Support
The support team will assist you during your first classroom period. In
addition, enthusiastic BioBridge UCSD mentors can also assist (a treat
for your high school students). Note: Classroom support team and
undergraduate mentors are dependent upon their availability, so pick a
classroom implementation date in advance!
UCSD EXTENSION CREDIT NOW AVAILABLE!
You can now earn two quarter credits for completing all four
phases of training and implementation!
